Research Tips

This page is designed to help you research better and more accurately. Things to remember: remember to find good sources for the information you need. Start with books, then move to magazines and POWER Library. Use other databases next; go to the free web last and remember to check the authority (who wrote it), bias (is there a slant to the info), and content (is the info accurate) of the site. Remember that different search engines use different search strategies.

Consider the following questions to help you research your topic.

The General Research Process

Information Questions

    Did I read and understand the assignment?
    Did I form questions about the information I need for the assignment?
    Is my topic narrow enough, or is the topic so broad that I will find too much information?
    Do I know how to communicate information in the appropriate format?
    What are my deadlines?
Looking for Answers
    What sources may I use to gather information?
    What are good sources, and where do I find them?
    What are good keywords for my topic?
    What books and databases will I use?
    Did I use appropriate sources to answer my information questions?
Gathering and Selecting Information
    Is the information what I need? Is it current, authoritative, and reliable? Did I scan it to make sure I print just the section of information that I need?
    Did I make notes about the source that I will need for my bibliography?
    Did I find new keywords in my search?
    Did I read and highlight the information I need for my project?
    Did I gather the required number and type of sources?
Applying Information
    Is my information in the proper format for the project: poster, paper, project, PowerPoint, speech, etc.?
    Did I use what I learned to make new assumptions about my topic?
    Do I need to go back to step 2 and find more information?
Evaluation
    Did I follow the research process?
    Have I revised to improve my work?
    Did I have a peer evaluate or comment on my work?
    Is my project well organized? Is my project quality work? Am I proud of the final project?
    Have I edited for grammar and mechanics?
    Did it meet the requirements?
    Did I meet or exceed requirements?
    Did I meet my deadlines?
    What did I learn, and what else do I want to learn?
    Do I have a bibliography that is correctly formatted?
